VERSUS!: TONY MICELLI VS. MR. BELVEDERE

Who is the better Housekeeper in the world of 80s TV sitcoms

If you’re like me, television became the baby-sitter in your household, and you learned most of your life’s sessions via the teachings of the characters on whatever program was flickering at the moment. As a guy, I had to look for male role models but 80s TV was a vast landscape of male house keepers…

I always questioned was who is the more masculine of the house keepers making a living  in a female dominated industry? Was it Tony Micelli or Lynn Belvedere ?

Tony Micelli is a former second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals who was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury.  He is a Widower who wants to move his daughter out of Brooklyn to find a better environment, as luck would have it, the chance to be a live-in Maid for divorced advertising executive Angela Bower pops up out of nowhere. Wackiness ensues when Tony the the “male ” is taken out of his element and is placed into Angela’s world where she is the “figure head ” the breadwinner of the household (add in a cougar nymph grand mother and you got 8 seasons of gold.)

When the recession hit in the early 80s, British butler Lynn Belvedere was looking for a job in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Again, out of nowhere Belvedere meets Cleveland Indians announcer Bob Uecker. The premise of the show deals with struggles of Belvedere to adapt to the Bob Uecker’s household.

Belvedere is fat and British
Micelli is skinny and the typical Italian stereotype

Its common knowledge that Micelli has had sex with numerous women including his employer and maybe Mrs. Rossini
Belvedere’s sexual escapades are not well known, he has no real friends, and had a close bond with Wesley… Bob Uecker’s son
