The month of February is starting off with a bang in my opinion at the Megaplex. I really like what it has to offer.
Big Miracle is romantic drama starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski. The film is based on the 1989 book Freeing the Whales by Tom Rose, which covers Operation Breakthrough, the 1988 international effort to rescue gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska. The story in a nut shell, as I just stated, follows a nonprofit aid worker and a government worker who spark romantically as they work together in the effort to free three California gray whales who have become trapped in a hole in the ice of the Arctic Circle.
I am a sucker for feel good true stories like this one. I’m also a HUGE John Krasinski fan, and while I think it’s very impressive the career Drew Barrymore has had, I just don’t get her. This may be the weakest release of the week, but if this is your jam, check it out as it may bring you back to the glory days of Free Willy.
Chronicle is a science fiction superhero film. It stars relatively unknowns Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan, and Alex Russell. It tells the story of a group of friends who gain powerful superhuman abilities and use them for mischief and personal gain until one of them begins to use their powers for darker purposes.
This movie looks AWESOME. Yes I am a sucker for the genre, but there is something about this film that screams MASSIVE POTENTIAL HIT. It has appeared out of nowhere, and is demanding your immediate attention. The documentary style, while some may say is getting old; I think it adds a tremendous originality to this genre. All in all, this movie looks fuckin badass, and hopefully it will bring along new and exciting opportunities for its cast.
The Woman in Black is a horror thriller starring MY MAN Daniel Radcliffe. I have been excited for this film the moment I heard about it, and it’s my pick of the week. It tells the story of a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who leaves his son in London to settle the legal affairs of the recently deceased Alice Drablow. He discovers that a series of inexplicable accidents and suicides have forced the parents of her village to barricade their children indoors, as if protecting them from an unseen foe. When Arthur stays the night all alone at the Drablows’ foreboding house, he hears the screams of a drowning child and sees decaying children listlessly wandering the marshes. He will soon discover these haunting figures share the same date of death, and the same killer. The Woman in Black is the ghost of a scorned woman who was unable to save Nathaniel, her beloved son, from drowning. She now takes on a horrifying form. Set on vengeance, her veil hides gaping sockets eaten away by scavengers and her curse hides an even darker secret; whenever she is seen, a child dies.
This film is a true horror, and is bringing the genre back to what it should be, providing genuine scares, just not blood and guts which is what the American Horror has turned into. I think this is an awesome first post Potter project for Daniel to have taken on, and he is really going to show the world he is here to stay. As a huge fan, and recently seeing him on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, I am already sold that he is a rare talent, now it’s your turn!
