This past week I was able to get my hands on a DVD of the Star Wars: Clone Wars movie. Maybe it was just that I got it for free or that I was lit up on helium and ecstasy, but I have to say, in all honesty, I liked it.

I get a sense that it has a resounding 8% on www.Rottentomatoes.com for a reason. I feel that this reason is because people were expecting (falsely I might add) this film to be an epic swoon of the most-fanciful elements of the Star Wars universe. Instead, the critics were treated to what is essentially an hour and a half long premiere episode of the Clone Wars t.v. show.

If taken within the context of the premiere episode of the show, it’s really not that bad. It has a paper-thin plotline for sure, but it has a surprisingly robust amount of action throughout the duration that I only felt myself drifting outside the realm of the movie during a ten minute lull in the middle.

As for the animation. Sure, it looks cheap on the surface. But it does have a unique style that, while at first off-putting, grows on you quickly until you forget you even had any grievances with it at all. Remember, this film should be considered part of the t.v. show; they need the animation to be good, not great, to keep costs on the low. Is it the best CGI ever? Not even close. But it does it’s job.

Overall, it’s a cute little diversion that does it’s job as the lead-in for the t.v. show. Is it the best Star Wars film they could have put in a theatre and charged people $10.00 to see? No. Is it possibly on-par with at least one, if not two, of the three prequel films when viewed on a DVD that I got for free? Yes.
