HOW COME THE 80’s NEVER DIED?

Think about it.

Fashions and trends come and go, but the 1980’s never left.  Why is that?

Even children who were born in the 90’s are all about the 80’s now.

We even have shows like We <3 The 80’s !!

80s

I guess the music was cool:

Ozzy, Ramones, Queen, Cure, David Bowie, Styx, U2, Journey, Blue Oyster Cult all had albums come out.  The official Blues Brother’s Soundtrack came out too.  Hair Metal was born.   Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns N Roses…too, Poison, Motley Crue, and Bon Jovi. Pop had a good time too, Michael Jackson reinvented himself, Madonna came out, Stacy Q, The Bangles.  Hip Hop became big with the help of Beastie Boys and Run DMC… alright 80’s, you won this round.  There is no arguing the music.

Fashion:

The fashionistas in the 80’s mimicked the styles of the movies and musicians, which is always a trend in mainstream culture, but lets take a look at these people.

There were the Valley Girls, inspired by… Valley Girl.  Big glasses, little poofy skirts, oddly bright plastic accessories…

Day Glo/Valley Girl
The Cure and David Bowie Peoples in London which largely influenced American Fashion:

As much as people try to hide this one, Dynasty also influenced fashion in the 80s…

Miami Vice, Calvin Kline, Thriller, The Lost Boys, Hair Metal and even Hip Hop influenced how they dressed:

I don’t know about you… but to say the least… the 80’s were really eclectic.  Despite the different cliques of people not always hanging out together, the 80’s seemed to be a decade of “self” expression and fashion freedom.  They look kind of funky and carefree, ok, 80’s you win again.
While we’re talking about Films and Fashion, I looked up the top 10 grossing films in the 80’s… and… there is NO WAY I can argue with the awesomeness.  ET, Star Wars, Batman, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Back to the Future AND Indiana Jones.  The Shining, Fatal Attraction, Animal House, Karate Kid, Home Alone, Feris Bueller, Airplane!, Full Metal Jacket … damnit… this will take me entirely to long to even LIST the awesomeness let alone outlink it.  My Netflix list just got longer.
The arcade games reigned supreme and consoles came out, The cartoons were awesome too.  As a child who grew up in the 1990’s I know I loved watching the re-runs better than the current programming.
Man, I feel pretty defeated right now.
Maybe the 80’s rocked so much in our minds because the 90’s in comparison sucked; I blame Nirvana.
What are your feelings on the 1980’s?

A Love Letter To Phillies and Yankees Fans

So, the Phillies actually pulled it together to make Game 6 of the 2009 World Series necessary! Whoopdi-doo! Let’s be real here, it’s been a pretty exciting post-season up to this point, and it’s nice to see the modern day New York Yankees having trouble with a team that isn’t the Red Sox. May the best team win!

Yeah, right. The fans for these teams are out for blood. If you’re a Phillies fan in New York, you’re wearing your team cap proudly, accepting any ridicule that may come your way and swiftly responding with the first dirty-ass Philadelphian rebuttal that comes into your uncombed head. It’ll probably include cheesesteak, because that’s just about all your state has going for it these days. At least you’re good at grilling burgers, Philly. And now, for a picture of Jimmy Rollins taking a baseball to the nose. (special thanks to the lovely Shannon Blow and Jane Blow)

Allow me to put this on the table – I’m a Yankees fan (“Ohhh my god, no wayyyy!”). However, this does not mean I hate the Mets, despise the Red Sox, or think that A-Rod was right when he was taking steroids. Hell, he’s playing better baseball now than when he was a ‘roid head. This being said, every one of you Yankee fans need to stop using the word ‘dynasty’ in regards to your favorite baseball team. You’re doin’ it wrong. Dictionary meaning in 3… 2…

dynasty |ˈdīnəstē|
noun ( pl. -ties) : a line of hereditary rulers of a country

I understand the fact that the Yankees hold the world record of 26 World Series Championships, way ahead of any other MLB team (done screaming “RINGS BRO, RINGS!” yet?), but this can’t even be loosely described as a dynasty. Aside from having no hereditary relation to one another, the only thing they “rule” is a diamond shaped dirt field with grass around it. They’re just really good at baseball. As a matter of fact, the only time I want to hear you say ‘dynasty’ is when you’re discussing the Ming dynasty, Tang dynasty or any other actual dynasty that has had a major effect on civilization. Hey A-Rod, nice face.

Here’s to hoping that Game 6 is a good one. Whether the Yankees take the World Series now, or the Phillies put up a fight to bring the viewers a Game 7; it’s going to be a fun show either way. In the meantime, keep the stereotypes coming, fans. It just gives me more to write about.
