Support Your Local Economy on Small Business Saturday

On November 26, you can take part in Small Business Saturday. Now in its second year, Small Business Saturday is all about supporting your local shops. These days, most folks don’t think twice about spending their well-earned skrilla at places like Wal-Mart, and Target. They have everything you could want in one place, so why shop elsewhere, right?

The problem with “Superstores” is that they take valuable business away from your neighborhood mom and pop shops. And in many instances, these big corporations put those small stores out of business. This hurts the essence of a community, and that sucks. A lot. You might not know that DAPS is actually a subsidiary of NB Technologies (a local web developing company) and we try to support our neighborhood businesses by copping our swag at places like Richmond Hood, and getting our graphic design work done at Metroink.

Sure, we have other options, but we like to keep it in the neighborhood when we can. Yeah, we like to keep it real.

Small Business Saturday is smack down in the middle of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the years most anticipated weekend for a lot of crazy folks. Forget about the huge savings for a moment and think about what goes down on Black Friday. A lot of people throw common sense and etiquette out of the window just to save a few bucks on crap. Customers have even been rushed to the hospital in the past, all because they were trying to get the best deal on the latest gaming console.

On the following Monday, it’s your chance to buy more useless things for a few dollars less. But this time, instead of taking part in a stampede, shoppers spend hours on their computers ordering a ton of stuff they eventually return because “the product didn’t fit right”, or because “it didn’t look like it does in the picture.” Take a step back. Is all of this worth it?

It’s actually less stressful and easier to be a consumer in your own town on a day like Small Business Saturday. There probably won’t be any injuries, and you’ll most likely find everything you’re looking for. Most importantly, you’re supporting your community. We should always try to better our local economy. And you know this, maaaaan.
