Regardless of how mentally fucked up MJ was, he’s still arguably the best male pop act of the past thirty years. Who has toped him? Name one solo male artist who’s sold more albums. I agree with both Lauren and Sarah.

Michael Jackson was no hero, no standard for America. He made a lot of money because he was so bizar and because (can I say it?) he appealed to a sub-culture. He identified with gang-bangers; that said a lot about MJ to me.

The CNN tv coverage is full of outright lies. They are saying Jackson was the biggest pop entertainer ever. What about Sinatra? What about the impact of the Beatles?

And when you think about it, what is the real value of pop stars? Next to zero!

If you ask me, the real loss this week was: the little south-side girl in Chicago who was shot to death by driveby gangbangers, the Parkerburg football coach who was shot by a mentally ill student, Ed McMahon and Farah Fawcet. MJ does not make my top 10 list.

Who cares? PLENTY of people. So many people are saddened by the loss of Michael Jackson. It was crazy, seeing the amount of people mourning his loss on Facebook, as soon as it happened, or the amount of threads about it on message boards. He made a huge impact on peoples lives.

He was a guy that was targeted for being a very weird and eccentric dude. That’s all I saw. I saw a man that was judged so fucking much during his downfall. Yeah, no doubt, he lost his marbles, but I never really bought any of the accusations. But that’s not even the point, the point is, people care and I think people have every right to mourn over one of the most important and influential artists of all time.

And regardless, even with all of that bullshit, there’s no denying his success and accomplishments for pop music, or music in general.

Ok, first off, never once in my article did I ‘bash’ Michael for not being a talented singer or performer. I was simply pointing out the fact that he is HUMAN, not a God, and has MANY flaws. Yes, he is a legend, but far from a role model. And Sarah, THE F-ING BEATLES top him. And yes Jim, Sinatra as well. Or even Elvis! He is 100% up there as one of the top greatest musical acts ever, but defiantly not the best in my opinion. The impact of The Beatles stretches across more of a playing field of influence than Michal Jackson does and if you disagree with me, then I’m sorry.

And my ‘who cares’ title wasn’t trying to tell people you shouldn’t care, I did at the end of the article did say I am sorry if this offends the MILLIONS of fans he had.

Michael Jackson = Pop Music, but Pop Music does not = Michael Jackson. Far from it.

And call me old fashion for sympathizing with a woman who battled cancer for many years, but I feel like her death is more of a tragedy.

So he sold a lot of albums, so did The Carpenters. Stallone sold alot of movie tickets. Does that make him a great actor?
I liked his weirdness more than I liked his music.

First of all Evan, this isn’t his funeral. FAR FROM IT! And once again I have to defend myself and say that I NEVER SAID HIS MUSIC WASN’T GREAT. He was a talented performer, but his lyrics were second rate like Stumpy Joe stated in his comment. And Joe, I don’t think he would have said hi if we met him on the street. He probably would have walked right by us like Megan Fox did to the boy trying to give her a rose.

It seems that the article is having a lot of feedback, both negative and positive. I have to side more with the negative feedback on this issue. I feel that the main problem with the article was how it was worded and it rubbed a lot of people off the wrong way. The article seems to suggest that Michael Jackson is dead and nobody should give a damn about. However, I feel that if you want to make a more valid argument, then you could have stated that the legacy of Michael Jackson should not be necessary forgotten about but people should move on with their lives. The media will spend all weekend talking about his death and to that extent I agree with you that there are more important stories out there. As far as that goes, that’s why I personally feel and I’m not expecting you to retract your statement.

As for some other people, who have not bothered to check the history of rock and roll, Elvis Presley didn’t have all the screws in his head properly tighten towards the end. It’s kind of a shame because in ten years or so, we’ll turn Michael into another Elvis idol. In a few years, we’ll see the Michael Jackson impersonators walking on the streets, if they haven’t already.

Hey Emily, its Brendan agian. Wanted to say hi…. Hey, check this out. Did you know that Richard Dean Anderson went to your High School? He’s the guy who played MacGyver. Actually I lied he didn’t, but he kinda did. You see Richard went to Alexander Ramsey High school, more commonly known as Ramsey high. In 1986, about seven or eight years before you were born Ramsey high merged with Frank B. Kellogg High School due to declining enrollment at both schools. The new high school used the facilities from the previously existing Alexander Ramsey complex, and the former Kellogg High School became Roseville Area Middle School. Plans originally called for construction of a new high school (replacing both the Ramsey and Kellogg school buildings) on district-owned land near Lake Owasso. In the early 1990s, it was decided to expand and remodel the existing Roseville Area High School instead. The land held by the school district was sold and the proceeds were used to finance the construction at RAHS. The community built on the sold land is now known as Owasso Hills. During the 1986-87 school year RAHS operated on two campuses, with both East Campus (the former Kellogg site) and West Campus (formerly Ramsey) serving grades 9-12. From 1987 to 1997 RAHS was only 10-12th grades with 9th grade at Roseville Area Middle School. Upon completion of the construction in the fall of 1997, 9th grade was moved to RAHS. this is no way to speak to each other. to understand each other is to try to see things from others’ point of view.

Now lets try and break it down.

Lauren, you struck a cord, and you have valid points about this pop star. He was a brilliant and gifted singer. and even more so was his dance moves. Anyone would have to give him that.

But lets look at the person… He was abused as a child, he hit “superstar” at a very young age, and then was criticized by many.

why would anyone want to change their identity if they weren’t happy with themselves. And then have to lie about it (skin disease). MJ was hurt, lost, lonely, and just craving to be accepted. He did outlandish things to societies standard to get attention. He just wanted to be understood. maybe his method was not how we would have done it, but why should we judge.

Now lets talk about all you… This hate we are sharing. would you consider these words and actions that identify yourselves as MJ fans? Pride for MJ is not the point im making. I am saying, to accept others opinions, and then ask them why 5 times. Why do you say hurtful things, why do you feel that way about another human being, why are you not considering my feelings, why are so careless with your words, and why do you feel this point is true. (you can come up with your own) but my point is, that it is easier to understand someone if you ask, then it is to force your opinion and expect them to accept it.

If we want to say we listen to MJ’s music and then say such hateful things… i question your allegiance.

let’s be understanding, and put aside our different views.

Shoving our views in others faces only makes them stick to their original point.

Make a difference and find out why before we become just like so many and just carelessly spread hate.

Finally! The first thing you said that I agree with. You are entitled to YOUR opinion, just the same as I am entitled to MINE. I think that people are making a big deal about this death. How many times daily did you hear a MJ song on the radio before he died? Where I am, maybe like 3 times a day between different stations. Now, it’s all they play. Why? Because they are feeding into this pop-culture, main-stream phenomenon.

They all do not have a history with me Emily. Just like you said, people are entitled to their own opinions, they are too. Some of them agree with me, and some of them agree with you.
