This week I sat down with Scream star, former WCW champion, and CGI spider killer David Arquette to talk about–stuff. You read now.
How did you first get interested in wanting to be an actor?
I’ve wanted to act as far back as I can remember. My mother taught an acting class and my father performed with Improvisation troops in Chicago when I was 3-4 years old. One of my earliest memories is joining the other children in my mother’s class to form a dragon, a couple of kids would be the head – a few kids the body – and so on… I was part of the tail. We brought all the parts to life by moving together and making dragon noises as we started to whip the tail around by running back and forth. Acting in my family goes back to Vaudeville and my great grand parents. When I moved out to Los Angeles, around 5 years of age, I did my first play “Peter Rabbit” at the local library on Melrose and June St.
What was it like winning the WCW championship?
Winning the WCW World Champion belt was a real trill of a lifetime. I had grown up watching wrestling in the Andre the Giant, Junk Yard Dog, Hulk-A-Mania times. My father even did the voice-over of Jimmy Super Fly Snuka for the WWF cartoon. The wrestling world was pretty viscous toward me, being an outsider and coming in and getting the title, but people like ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flare and DDP welcomed me with open arms. I’ll never forget having a few drinks with Ric Flare in the hotel bar and hearing stories about the good ole days. He’s the greatest… But I would miss getting spit on.
What are your thoughts on directing your wife in her show “Dirt”?
I had a blast directing Courteney on ‘dirt’. She’s one of my favorite actors (and I’m not just saying that because she’s my wife), she has a reality to her that is super hard to find in front of a camera and she can balance comedy and drama like the best of them. I also knew the show so well and felt really comfortable with the cast and crew that it was a truly memorable experience.
What was it like working with the Muppets in “Muppets From Space”?
Working on ‘Muppets From Space’ was also an unforgettable thrill. I grew up loving The Muppets and Jim Henson, so when I got a chance to see the behind the scenes mechanics of bringing those puppet characters to life and working with the likes of Frank Oz was really educational and fun.
What artists/bands are you currently listening to?
Ben Harper is one of my all time favorite musicians as is Sheryl Crow (her new album is wonderful) and they’re both my dear friends of mine. Lukas Haas also has an amazing album coming out… Check out his Myspace page myspace.com/lukashaas
Thoughts on working with Wes Craven in the Scream series?
I loved working with Wes Craven on the Scream series. I learned so much from him on a personal and professional level. He once sat me down during Scream 2 and gave me a real man to man talk about making it work with Courteney. That talk really helped me figure out what I had to do to be a good man. Not to mention he is a tremendous director and really open to sharing the process with an inspiring film maker.
If you could be any celebrity other than yourself, who would it be?
The actors I look up to are Marlon Brando, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Robert DeNiro, and Al Pacino. I love old black and white physical comedy and the brilliant films of the late 60’s early 70’s. Those are actors who’s careers I would like to emulate.
NY or LA? Why?
I would love to live in New York at some point but L.A. is my home and I love it. I grew up here and it’s a really diverse place. You have to have good friends and be open to finding new places to haunt. There are hidden treasures everywhere.
What are your thoughts on Gay Whales, or “Homosexuwhales”, gaining the right to marry?
I love ‘The Gays’. I’m so happy that as a society we are moving closer to accepting people for who there are regardless of race, religion or sexual preference. I grew up with my brother/now my sister Alexis and saw the ridicule and cruelty people would aim toward her in school and I just hated the way she was treated. Hatred is ugly. When you love someone and see them go through that it hurts, so when something like this happens, something like the government giving them the right to get married, it’s such a huge honorable step in the right direction. I love and respect the bible and religion in general, it’s a beautiful tool for being a better person but when people choose to use it for hate it is one of the most damaging things we can do as a society.
