How Come People are so pissed off about Michael Bloomberg winning a third term as mayor of NYC?

Are you one of the 47% of people who voted for Thompson yesterday? SHAME ON YOU.

First of all, before I get into this semi-politial discussion, I’d like to point out that I do not vote, but I am a New Yorker (born and raised) and I do follow politics. (It’s like watching American Idol without an AT&T txt message plan.)

Last night as I was watching NY1 waiting for the poll results to come in, I was SHOCKED at how close the race ended up being. I understand that a lot of people were pissed off about Bloomberg being a scumbag about term limits, but I didn’t think people were THAT pissed.

Look at it this way:
Anyone who says that Bloomberg is “bad” for NYC is just wrong. He has completely turned our schools around, he’s helped lower crime all over the city, he began a green initiative that will place NYC  among the top cleanest cities in the world, and he’s handled the budget relatively well.

The downsides? Well there are some, I can admit. The smoking ban is more a budget padder (as Noam Chomsky said, anytime something is criminalized, it’s a matter of class, not crime). AND police have gotten a bit overzealous (a lot overzealous). Other than that, he’s done good.

“But Carlo, you are forgetting all the out-of-towners coming in, spending all their money in our city, and raising my rent, and being overall idiots.”

Umm no. I think you are forgetting that this is NEW YORK CITY. Since, I dunno, the establishment of New York City, MILLIONS of people from ALL OVER THE WORLD came into New York. These people, spending their money here is GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY, and as far as your rent is concerned? Talk to your landlord.

To the point of Thompson: His entire campaign was him being a pied-piper of people butthurt over the term limit issue. THAT’S IT. What else did he offer except a channel to place your ridiculous rage?

So to answer my own question: “How come people are so pissed off about Michael Bloomberg winning a third term as mayor of NYC?”

It’s because you are butthurt and don’t pay attention to the city you are trying to protect from a “monarchy” (which is ridiculous because he’s a MAYOR).

I welcome your gripes in the comments. (OH, and if ANYONE mentions that he’s a republican, your argument is void. He’s an Independent in name AND practice.)

The problem is that he went ran for a third term without bringing it to the popular vote. If he would of brought him running for a third term to the voters and they all voted yes then no big deal but when you can just go to the city council and say “Hey, here is a ton of money let me run for a third term.” It gets a little ridiculous. what is going to stop him from running for a 4th term?

also: “what is going to stop him from running for a 4th term?”

    The Governor.

the Governor didn’t stop him running for a third term. What makes you think the governor won’t decide “Hey, this Bloomberg guy has it right and im just going to keep running as well.” then we will never be able to have any change as it will just end up being the same people in office. At that point they are only servicing their own needs and not the needs of the people (I guess that happens anyway)

All i can say is thank god for republican Staten Island because had Thompson, it would have been a greater regret. President Obama didn’t even give him a proper endorsement. Things might be better for the next four years because we now have John Liu for Comptroller, who will definitely do a far better job than Thompson. Second, we’ll most likely have Andrew Cuomo as Governor the next time so a fourth term would be very unlikely.

P.S. Who re-elected James Molinaro and Vincent Ignizio?

The governor didn’t stop him this time, because Bloomberg is the right man for the job. I highly doubt he’ll run for a 4th term.

The governor CAN’T do what Bloomberg did because he answers to Congress/President. And they wont let him do it.

and to be honest, if NYC keeps moving in this positive direction, I’l keep supporting him.

so you would be fine with Dictator Bloomberg for a 4th and 5th and 6th and 7th term?

    Ian, I agree.

In the discussions about Staten Island politics (which are interesting in it’s own right) let me give some history for our out of city readers.

Staten Island is a Republican Borough, home of the NY based tea parties (facepalm). This election was REALLY interesting because Bloomberg got 54% (give or take a point) of the SI vote while SI republicans won by miles.

SI Politics runs like small scale New Jersey Politics. Corruption abound. The only shining light I found was the victory of Debbi Rose, the first black elected official on Staten Island. (Albeit her district is the “Downtown” district, that actually SHOULD be dictating the direction of the island.)
